Final Music Video

This is our final music video which we have adjusted based upon the feedback from our audience. We have included more performance and an initiator for the narrative to make it clearer.

Final Website

This is the link to our band website and also there is a video tour of the website below detailing what it consists of.

Final Digipak

This is our groups final digipak which we believe to be an improvement on the rough copy as we took into account the various improvements we could of made. This included filing in spaces and changing font colour and size in order to make the text more visible and to reduce empty space.

Evaluation 3

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

What did they think of the video?
When this question was asked the common answer I got From the feedback I was that they liked the editing of the video and how it was made and put together i.e the cleanness of the cuts. In addition the use of throwing the focus which is what the group as a whole was hoping for as it was one of the shot types that we wanted to incorporate in our music video the most as it would help with guiding the audience to what we wanted them to see and also to help indicate what is actually happening such as indicating someones vision is going blurry. One of the people we asked said that they felt there was a real unique feel about the video and that we used that to make it our own which is what we had intended to do because we didn't want it to be generic rock video that consisted of low key lighting and dark clothing but we did want to keep some stereotypical elements so we ended up challenging the conventional coloring and lighting but still conformed to various techniques and we that we created an alternative rock music video which we deem successful based upon the feedback.

Could they sense a narrative?
The response from this varied as the first person said they didn't sense a narrative and the other two did but didn't grasp the whole narrative but managed to understand the majority of it. Having someone say they didn't feel a narrative took place isn't what we expected as I thought it was clear but maybe it was overpowered by the performance as the music video turned out to be a hybrid. As mentioned before the ones who sensed a narrative didn't fully grasp it as they stated that they sensed a journey/two people meeting up to play/practice music together, while that is true, it was actually part of a dream sequence which is why we focused heavily on the main character falling asleep and the music starting to play as it happened. In addition we also added the trippy effect, solarize, to the performance to try and reinforce the dream sequence but based on the feedback I think we failed in that aspect of the production. The overall feedback from this question was positive as the audience recognized the narrative which is what was seen for roughly half of the video and that the narrative side to music video was an overall success.

What they think worked well?
What all of the audience members told us is that the video was put together quite well in terms of editing such as the cleanness of the cuts and how well it flowed. This tells me that it looked somewhat like how a professional music would like due to  the use of editing to the beat so that the video matched the tempo of the song and also the synchronisation of the music with the video as in the band members strummed their guitars. What was also pointed out was the diverse shot types that were used such as point of view(of the skateboard) and the tracking shot(on the skateboard) and how they worked together as a whole. I believe this to be a success as this is what we prepared for and this positive feedback suggests that we have achieved what we had hoped for as we wanted to make our music video creative and unique to us through the use of unconventional techniques.

What they liked most?
The first person talks about how they liked how adventurous the video was which I was pleased to hear because initially that wasn't the main focus of the video but as I filmed and edited i realised that I could make the video better by being more creative so a lot of re-shooting took place and it seems to have paid off as it has worked very well adventurous wasn't what we were going for but it is a good response to our creativity as our video has been given various compliments. The second individual states how he sees the video as unique the due to how and how it didn't fully conform and challenged the stereotypical conventions of a rock music video, we aimed to do this because we didnt want to be seen as generic so we actively tried to break away from the stereotype but not completely hence the choice of clothing and overall look of the characters.

What improvements they would make?
An improvement mentioned was that the song was quite loud/aggressive throughout and the ending didn't reflect this and was slightly boring so the ending could of been made more aggressive. Reflecting on the video I agree and disagree with this statement. This is because the ending of the song does have a slow loud sort of sound appear a few times and so the band could potentially still be playing. However there is also the same finger tapping from the beginning which is more prominent and so I feel that that was a more reflective ending against how the song finished but looking at the whole song i agree with the statement.
Another improvement was that a few of the solarized scenes didn't work so well which I completely agree with as the shots that were in field like areas didn't have enough color within the scene to solarize so there was minimal diversification in the color scheme and so the "purple" grass was quite overpowering and drew focus from the other areas on screen.Another improvement mentioned was that at the beginning of the video the video looked quite grainy (in the red bedroom) which I completely agree with but I was unaware of how to fix the problem as the lighting in the scene was natural and wasn't altered in any way.

What i have learned from the audience feedback is that overall the video is a success but nowhere near perfect and so improvements can be made but the audience enjoyed the aspects of the video we focused on heavily. However one thing the audience missed out on is the narrative and how it was difficult to follow. This issue takes away from the video as we aimed for it to be a hybrid of narrative and performance but is seems as though it was pushed aside by the performance.

Was the digipak visually appealing? Did it promote the artist(s) and music video successfully?
When asked this 2 of the 3 people we asked said that the colour scheme was very eye catching as it was quite bright but wasn't confusing and also they stated that the the CD itself w\ unique as the idea of a wood styled CD tied in nicely with the rest of the digipak due to the nature theme we had going on. However the 3rd person said that the colours in his opinion were to bright and overpowered the sides with the artists on them. While this feedback was necessary we kept the brightness of the digipak due to our idea to make it look slightly surreal which is evident in our music video also. However I do understand that it isn't to everyone's taste. In addition to this they also said that the spines were hard to read and that we should change the, we were aware that it is difficult to read but it was the clearest colour that we could find.

All 3 of the audience said that the digipak promoted the artist(s) based on a number of things.
  • The two band members were clearly visible on the digipak
  • The digipak showcased the bands name
  • The digipak used images that linked with the location/scenery of the music video

This was good to hear as this is what we had initially aimed for as the synergy between the two enables them to cross promote each other as the audience can make the links between the two media texts and it makes it easier for them to find the band. Besides the artist(s), the location was quite a big thing to identify the artist(s) as the audience found the surrealism memorable and that it could be unique to the band and that it is what they will be remembered by.

Was the website visually appealing? Did it promote the artist(s) and music video successfully?
All three of the audience members said that the the website was eye catching similar to the digipak as they both had similar themes and imagery so the audience was able to link the two together. However they also said that while the background worked the yellow colour on the secondary background didn't fit the original theme of the site and that it didn't tie in well. I understand that it doesn't match the theme entirely but other colours either blended in too well or simply stuck out more so that the yellow background. This problem could possibly have been overcome if we spent more time searching for appropriate colour schemes.

They found that the website promoted both the artist music video and digipak successfully. This is because the site contains a gallery which features the artist in almost all of the photos, in addition to this the site showcases the band logo getting the audience to recognise who the logo belongs too. Finally in the merchandise section of the site the digipak is avialabe to "purchase". The music video is on the homepage of the site essentially making the audience see it and due tio the bold writing stating its new it encourages the audience to watch it.

Overall what I have learned is that while the work can be improved it successfully promotes each other through synergy due to the use of similar images, the artist logo etc.

Rough Copy of the Digipak Analysis

This was our groups first design of the Digipak. The feedback was relatively positive but we will be making amendments on it due to what we have been told we can improve upon. The images themselves are quite good as it relates to the dream sequence of our piece as the coloration has been slightly saturated to give it a surreal affect.
However the top right and left images are considered to be too empty especially the top left as there is a lot of space next to the two artists in the images and to correct this we have come up with the idea to add quotes from the artists themselves.
Another thing to improve upon is the text in the bottom center mid image. This is because there is too much green in the scene causing it to not stand out so well and it doesn't have a drop shadow so it is not as prominent as text could be. In order to correct this we are going to be changing the font to a colour which doesn't blend in well with green and add a drop shadow to make it more noticeable as text.

Rough Copy of the Digipak

This is our groups rough version of our Digipak which we will show to people in order to get feedback on how to improve it and then we will do so accordingly so that it's the best we can possibly make it.

Rough Edit of the Music Video Analysis

When we showed different people our music video and the feedback was generally positive but there was a common theme for improvement which was mainly the narrative as the audience couldn't tell what was actually going on but that I believe is down to it being unfinished as the initiating scene in which the narrative starts isn't completed yet. In order to correct this we have to input the audio for a conversation that happens off screen which will make the narrative much clearer as the dialogue while being small is debatable key.

Rough Edit of the Music Video

(Due to it being a rough edit it is not complete and so the footage finishes at 2 minutes and the rest is just the audio i.e the song)

This is our groups rough edit of our music video which we put together to gather general feedback on what could be improved upon for our final piece. We have been taking the feedback into consideration.

Final Record Label Logo

Record Label Logo

This is the our groups final record label logo. It consists of a monitor with the text 'Bass Records' hovering above and over it. The monitor was chosen because it is generic equipment that is used by musicians and record companies. We didn't want to choose something as generic as a vinyl because we believe that it is overused and dated. A monitor on the other hand is a frequently used item in both recordings and live shows. Two different fonts were used for the words. A thicker block font was used for for 'BASS' because basses are usually thick and deep and this font suits the characteristics of a bass. The other font used was in the style of scratchy stencil which we used this to link it to vinyls because vinyls are scratched by a needle to produce the sound.

Making of the Record Company logo

Similar to the artist logo the record company logo was made in the same way the post shows how it was made and the decisions that came with it.
